Mother of Dragons's Guide to Harrogate, North Yorkshire

Located just a stone's throw from the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the Victorian spa town of Harrogate is a heaven for tourists of all shapes and sizes.

The original Victorian Turkish Baths is still operational and open to the public, and so history lovers and spa lovers alike are spoiled for choice during any visit to Harrogate. Any ramblers visiting the area could also do a lot worse than to end there trip with a short visit here.

Among the town's more famous visitors was Agatha Christie, who was discovered in a local hotel after a short disappearance and a major manhunt in 1926. Whatever she was trying to get away from, she is in good company, as Harrogate remains a popular tourist destination to this day. As well as having some of the UK's most beautiful countryside right on its doorstep, Harrogate is also a shopper's haven, and one of the top destinations well-heeled locals would choose to come and splash a bit of cash. The result is a vast array of boutiques of various kinds - more than enough for a happy afternoon's browsing.

Consistently voted one of the best places to live in the UK, Harrogate is known within Yorkshire as one corner of the "Golden Triangle" - the others being Leeds and York. Originally coined by estate agents trying to explain rocketing house prices, the phrase has in recent times taken on a broader meaning and now more or less simply refers to the posher bits of North Yorkshire. Eating, drinking and sleeping in Harrogate is likely to reflect this reality, but it's a beautiful town, and well worth it.

There is plenty to keep children occupied in the area, from stately homes and gardens to picnic spots and adventure playgrounds.

If you have more venues to suggest then let us know. We love adding new places to the site!

Some of our favourite venues around Harrogate, North Yorkshire

About half an hour's drive from Harrogate is Newby Hall, an eighteenth-century mansion designed by Christopher Wren. With 25 acres of gardens, a boating lake, an adventure playground and a miniature railway it is a paradise for young children, and pretty nice for adults too.

Stockeld Park is day out with a difference, with acres of outdoor play space and an enchanted forest to explore.
