Some child-friendly days out around Bolton-le-Sands, Lancashire

Latitude=54.3229|Longitude=-2.743957|Address1=|Address2=|Town=Kendal|County=Cumbria|Imageurl=|Text=Unlike most galleries, Abbot Hall did not start with a collection that needed somewhere to be displayed, but with a building that needed saving. It was the only Grade I listed building in Kendal, other than the Parish Church, and by the 1950s it was almost derelict and threatened with demolition.|SubHead1=|Text2=Abbot Hall was built in 1759 by Colonel George Wilson, the second son of Daniel Wilson of Dallam Tower, a large house and country estate nearby. It was built on the site of the old Abbot’s Hall, which formerly stood roughly where the museum is today. Before the dissolution of the monasteries this was where the Abbot or his representative would stay when visiting from the mother church of St Mary’s, York.

It is not known who the architect of the new Abbot Hall was, and it was evidently not terribly successful as a home. The newly-married Wilsons moved out and went to York after just a few years, and then it was lived in by a succession of different families over the next century, finally being owned by a local bank at the end of the 19th century.|Text3=All of the Lakeland Arts Trust galleries and museums are FREE for children up to the age of 16, making them ideal for a family gallery or museum visit.

The gallery is fully equipped for your visit, with baby changing facilities and a cloakroom with lockers, so there's no need to struggle!

To help youngsters get the most from their visit, we have Explorer Sacks which are full of fun activities and the free children's trail Look, Explore, Discover which was developed by year 3 pupils from Heron Hill Primary School in Kendal, Cumbria. Every Friday Crawl at the Hall lets your young ones get creative in the gallery and every Saturday during term time is INK u bet! the early morning weekend club to help young people explore their creative flair.|SubHead2=School Holiday Fun!|Text4=
